Problem

How do you give a Chirstmas present when the item hasnt even been releaseed yet? My daughters each asked for the Nintendo 3DS for Christmas in 2010. Unfortunately it became clear that the 3DS was not going to be released in time for Christmas.

Solution

I decided to provide my girls with gift certificates good for one Nintendo 3DS each on the product’s release. I wanted a creative way to package the gift certificate, so I mocked up a Nintendo 3DS box that could be wrapped and put under the tree. Picachu was their favorite Pokemon character and I was sure that in addition to the device, I would get a request for associated Pokemon games. The little icons on the side of the box signify that Picachu is an alien, the box is for the girls, the 3DS player includes a camera and game controls, and that they’ll be able to use it in the car for long drives. The only issue was explaining to the kids that the box was just a place holder, but they were so pleased with it that they’ve both kept it as souvenirs after they got the actual Nintendo.
